Hong Kong International Airport experienced massive passenger queues during the evening return peak on Thursday as thousands of holidaymakers concluded summer vacations. Social media images showed extensive lines stretching through terminals as travelers waited for transportation to immigration checkpoints, with some users describing "kilometer-long queues" forming since 8:30pm.
The congestion coincided with temporary adjustments to the automated people mover system between August 28 and September 8 for upgrade testing. After 8:00pm daily, the driverless train service has been suspended to accommodate new terminal construction, requiring most passengers to use alternative routes including moving walkways while shuttle buses transport passengers with special needs.
Airport data indicated approximately 27 arriving flights between 11:00pm and 12:10am, with many originating from popular destinations including Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok, and Taipei. The airport authority has implemented contingency measures including one-way bus services with estimated 20-minute transfer times between the West Hall and immigration facilities during the upgrade period.
