Hong Kong’s summer football fever could return this August, with reports that Premier League side Aston Villa is planning a visit to the city for a high-profile friendly against a German opponent.
According to sources familiar with the arrangements, Villa is expected to travel to Hong Kong in August to face a Bundesliga club, with Bayern Munich understood to be the most likely opponent. If confirmed, it would mark Villa’s first appearance in the city in more than 15 years.
The possible fixture follows a blockbuster summer in 2025, when Hong Kong hosted a series of international football showcases.
The Hong Kong Football Festival at Kai Tak Sports Park brought Liverpool, AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to the city, drawing nearly 100,000 fans across two matches. The North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham set a new single-match attendance record at the Kai Tak main stadium, with close to 50,000 spectators.
The momentum continued later in the summer when Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, visited Hong Kong for the Saudi Super Cup, further boosting local enthusiasm for elite-level football.
Bayern Munich, widely regarded as the most probable opponent for Villa, has strong name recognition among Hong Kong fans. The German champions, whose squad features England captain Harry Kane, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and rising star Jamal Musiala, last played in Hong Kong in 2007 during the 10th anniversary celebrations of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
There were earlier indications, as far back as last November, that Bayern was planning an Asian tour in August 2026, with Hong Kong included as a possible stop.
However, this summer also coincides with a FIFA World Cup year, which may affect squad availability. Many European clubs will have players involved in international duty, raising questions about whether full-strength lineups will travel or feature in preseason fixtures.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui recently acknowledged that 2026 being a World Cup year could affect the scale of visiting European clubs. She said teams coming to Hong Kong this summer “may not be as many or as concentrated as last year, but we will do our best.”
While official confirmation is still pending, the prospect of Aston Villa facing Bayern Munich in Hong Kong is already stirring anticipation among local fans.
If finalized, the fixture would reinforce the city’s growing status as a regional destination for major preseason football events — and offer supporters another chance to see global stars up close.
