Tencent (0700) chairman and chief executive Pony Ma Huateng will be absent from China's key annual political sessions later this week because of health reasons, but will submit written proposals instead, mainland media reported.
Ma, also a National People's Congress deputy, plans to submit seven written proposals, covering topics such as fintech, small and medium enterprise development, medical services, as well as ecology and environmental protection.
China's biggest annual political gathering, the plenary session of the National People's Congress, will begin on May 22 in Beijing.
Meanwhile, the third session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body, will start on May 21.
Usually held in early March, the postponement of this year's two conferences was announced on February 24 as China was in the grip of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Ma became an NPC delegate for the first time in 2013 but in 2014, he was also absent during the annual meetings of China's top legislative body and its main consultative body, due to a recurrence of lumbar spine problems.
Over the past eight years, he had submitted about 40 written proposals to the two sessions, the reports said.
The news about Ma came on the heels of Tencent posting a better-than-expected first-quarter net profit, driven by rising online gaming profits amid the virus lockdown. Revenue rose 26 percent to 108.1 billion yuan (HK$118.14 billion). Net profit, on a non-International Financial Reporting Standards basis, rose 6 percent to 28.9 billion yuan from a year earlier.
Shares of Tencent closed 0.43 percent higher at HK$423.
Ma previously stepped down as chairman and general manager of Tenpay Micro Loan, which is primarily involved in the online micro-credit business, according to enterprise information database Tianyancha.
In September last year, Ma also ceased to be the legal representative and executive director in its subsidiary Tencent Credit, mainland media reported, citing a mainland online database.
Pony Ma's proposals will cover fintech, SME development, medical services, ecology and environmental protection.
