Double Olympic silver medalist Siobhan Haughey adds a bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle final at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi.
The race on Sunday evening was won by China's Li Bingjie, clocking 3:55.83. Canada's Summer McIntosh got silver with 3:57.87. Haughey came third with 3:58.12.
Haughey earlier snatched two golds in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle finals last Saturday (Dec 18) and Thursday (Dec 16) respectively at the championships.
Haughey looked true to form as she finished first in heat 4 of the 400m freestyle, clocking 4:02.57, although it was slower than her personal best of 3:57.06 for the category.
In the 100m freestyle final on Saturday, she comfortably clocked 50.98 -- a championships’ record -- beating the likes of swimming heavyweights Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom who came second at 51.31 and the United States' Abbey Weitzeil who placed third at 51.64.
And last Thursday, Haughey became the first Hong Kong swimmer to break the world record for women’s 200m freestyle, when she swam at a stunning 1:50.31.
The record also smashed the previous time set by Sweden’s Sjostrom, who clocked 1:50.43 at the championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 2017.
