A government-dispatched 51-strong search and rescue team has arrived in Myanmar and is heading to its capital, Naypyidaw, to aid in the aftermath of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, bringing about nine tonnes of supplies to the region.
The SAR government has also reserved HK$30 million from the Disaster Relief Fund for emergency relief support.
The powerful earthquake hit Myanmar’s Sagaing Region on March 28, causing tremors felt in neighboring Thailand and Yunnan province, resulting in significant casualties and damage to infrastructure.
The Security Bureau announced on social media on Sunday that the 51-member team dispatched by the SAR government on March 29 arrived in Yangon, formerly Rangoon, later that night, where they were welcomed by Chinese diplomats and representatives from the Hong Kong Myanmar Chamber of Commerce.
The bureau indicated that the rescue team was arranged to travel by vehicle to Naypyidaw, with an expected arrival time later tonight.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung stated the team brought approximately nine tonnes of supplies to the area, including life detectors, satellite phones and drones, as well as two search dogs.
He expected that the hot weather in Myanmar would pose significant challenges for the rescue efforts.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu expressed deep sympathy for the tragedy and extended his condolences to the victims’ families.
Lee noted that the government has liaised with the Consul-General of Myanmar in Hong Kong and actively coordinated with various bureaux and departments to collect the necessary relief supplies.
He thanked all team members for their swift response and urged them to prioritize their safety.
