The tournament began today with two matches; the men's side featured teams from China, Japan, and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong men's team took to the field immediately following the opening ceremony, facing a quick initial score from China.
Hong Kong's standout player, Denmark, found a gap and scored a try with just 2:49 left in the first half, equalizing the score. Harry Sayers added another try just before halftime, giving Hong Kong a 14-7 lead.
In the second half, Denmark continued his impressive performance by scoring two additional tries. Towards the match's conclusion, 19-year-old newcomer James Kee capitalized on an opportunity along the sideline to score his first try for Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Sevens, cementing the team's 31-7 win to begin their Melrose Claymores title defense.
Denmark was recognized as the most valuable player following his hat-trick performance. His teammate, veteran Cado Lee, playfully remarked that Denmark was somewhat selfish by not passing the ball, but he acknowledged that Denmark played at his expected level and was unmatched in speed and toughness.
Lee further remarked on the team's performance, pointing out that it was decent despite some initial nerves and defensive errors. He expressed confidence that there would be no issues in the upcoming games.
Concerning the new Kai Tak venue, Lee shared that the atmosphere was excellent and the grass condition of the pitch was good, not being too slippery. He mentioned that the roof was closed, which made the fans' cheers feel overwhelming, something the team would need to adapt to.
As the evening progressed, the attendance increased, which was anticipated by Lee. He appreciated the large crowd, noting it was beneficial for the players. He also found the effect of dimming the lights as the teams entered to be very cool.
Denmark, celebrating his first hat trick in Hong Kong, expressed his gratitude towards the fans. He highlighted the significant support from the rugby sevens fans, likening it to having an extra player on the field. He described scoring in front of Hong Kong fans as a dream come true, emphasizing the special nature of each try scored there, especially in the presence of family and friends.
The Hong Kong men's team is set to face their "rival," Japan, in the second match of the Melrose Claymores competition tomorrow at 3.06 pm, while the women's team will play against Thailand at 2.06pm.
