Three people were injured in the explosion, including a 52-year-old male tenant who suffered burns and is in critical condition.
The explosion shattered the air conditioner and blew out the window frames in the affected unit on the 27th floor. The iron gate was tossed into the corridor due to the impact, leaving the area in chaos in scattered debris.
Lee, a 76-year-old resident living just opposite from the affected unit, recounted feeling shocked and experiencing chest pain immediately after the explosion. Thankfully, he was able to leave the hospital on the same day.
Speaking with Sing Tao Headline, the sister publication of The Standard, Lee recounted noticing a strange smell around 10am yesterday.
He added that the firefighters, police officers and gas company staff arrived one after another, but no one in the affected unit responded to their knocks on the door.
After the explosion, several firefighters entered the unit and rescued the male tenant, who was found unresponsive.
Another neighbor, Wong, recalled hearing a loud bang and feeling tremors in her unit.
She stated that firefighters and police officers failed to locate the source of the gas leak. However, shortly after the gas company staff arrived, the explosion occurred, prompting firefighters to instruct the residents to close their doors and open the windows.
Wong mentioned seeing the female tenant living in the affected unit going to work but hadn't seen the male tenant.
Sources indicated that a family of four lived in the affected unit, including a couple and two children, who had moved out a few years ago.
It is reported that the female tenant had not been seen returning to the unit three days before the explosion, while a debt collector had visited the unit two days ago.
