The walkway - built under the Island Eastern Corridor - spans 2.2 kilometres with a western and an eastern section. The western section, approximately 0.7 km long, runs from Oil Street to Tong Shui Road, whereas the eastern section, approximately 1.1 km long, runs from Tin Chiu Street to Hoi Yu Street. These two sections will be connected by the existing North Point Promenade.
Writing on social media, the Hong Kong leader said he had invited some youngsters to join him for a jog along the boardwalk today.
He said the friends he met today praised the boardwalk saying that exercising on it felt like walking on the sea, with the overhead East Corridor providing shade, protecting them from direct sunlight.
Lee believes that after the walkway’s opening, it will undoubtedly become a popular spot for citizens to take photos.
“My personal feeling is that whether you run, jog, or cycle along the boardwalk, the scenery is amazing. It’s nice to take in the views on a busy schedule, and Hong Kong is a beautiful place to call home,” he told reporters.
The Development Bureau earlier announced that the section from Fortress Hill to North Point will open to the public by the Lunar New Year - and the section between North Point and Quarry Bay will open in phases in the second half of this year.
After the completion of the project, a 13-kilometre harbourfront promenade will connect Kennedy Town in the west with Shau Kei Wan in the east of Hong Kong Island.
