Fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long, who returned from the Paris Olympics on Friday, stated that it was unbelievable that he managed to become the first athlete in decades to defend a men's foil title.
Cheung, who's also the first-ever Hong Kong athlete to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, was greeted by a crowd of fans as he arrived at the airport today.
He stressed that every Hong Kong athlete gives their very best and deserves respect regardless of whether they win a medal or not.
Cheung was glad that Hong Kong had won medals in fencing for two consecutive years and believed that it was not only the contribution of the current generation but also the results gained after the efforts of each generation.
The two-time gold medalist said that his condition before the event was not good and that he is still digesting the fact that he was able to defend his title and earn a gold medal, adding that he has no plans on what to do with his HK$6 million prize money.
In response to Italy's protest over potential bias concerning his victory against Filippo Macchi, Cheung said referees always adhere to fencing regulations, even if they may have varying interpretations.
He added that the referees in Paris were all professional and experienced.
Cheung also pointed out that many supporters in Paris wished him good luck in Cantonese, along with the venue being filled with the regional flag of Hong Kong, and thanked them for their support.
He said that he had prepared for the Olympics for the past three years, and it was both mentally and physically tiring, and he hoped to get some rest before preparing for the next season.
Cheung said his only regret from the Games was that the men's foil team didn't qualify.
He also left a message to young people that participating in sports is very healthy, and the most important thing is not giving up.
