Police Commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee announced on Sunday that 2,000 security cameras will be installed throughout Hong Kong this year, some of which may include a facial recognition system.
Siu said on a radio program that the government plans to set up the first batch of 615 cameras in March and the rest in stages at different crime hotspots where large crowds gather.
When asked whether facial recognition technology would be added to cameras, the police chief said he would not rule out the possibility and believed technology could help law enforcement.
He stressed that citizens do not have to worry about privacy issues as the police will consult the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, while the installation and use of closed-circuit television will comply with laws.
He mentioned that additional security cameras may be required in the future to enhance security measures.
Regarding the consultation on Article 23 of the Basic Law that suggests extending the detention period for arrested but uncharged persons, Siu said it may be necessary due to the complexity of the case and to prevent the relevant individuals from escaping custody.
He emphasized that the details are not yet finalized and that the public's opinions would be taken into consideration.
