The approximately 20 officers were seen with digging tools near the Tai Po Road-Ma Liu Shu section of the hills near the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on Monday and are believed to be looking for the missing watches from the robbery that occurred at Alpha Watch & Jewelry on December 12 (Tue).
The 24 robbed watches mainly involved four brands, including Rolex, Richard Mille, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet, with losses exceeding HK$40 million.
The priciest one is a white Richard Mille 35-03, which is worth some HK$4.6 million alone.
Officers had previously arrested three mainland men, aged 21 to 24, in relation to the crime, but the watches were nowhere to be found.
Two of the men were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and were taken to the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts last Friday (December 15), and the defendants did not need to enter a plea, pending further police investigation.
One of the defendants was released on bail, is not allowed to return to the place where the crime occurred and is required to report to the police station three times a week, while the other person was remanded under police custody.
The case has been adjourned to March 8 next year.
