Hong Kong’s welfare chief, Chris Sun Yuk-han, said on Thursday that the city’s first members-only ‘community living room’ will open on Fuk Wah Street in Sham Shui Po, with the space open till 10 pm each day.
The “community living room” plan was penned in the policy address yesterday, targeting tenants of subdivided flats.
Sun said the “community living room” will be set up on Fuk Wah Street in Sham Shui Po - close to the subdivided households - and will provide tenants with 8,000 sq ft of additional room to do homework, shower, cook and eat.
“Those who wish to use the space will only have to walk a few minutes to get there,” said Sun.
It is understood that a sponsor will be providing the venue for free for a period of three years, as well as covering renovation costs.
Sun said the Community Care Fund will be responsible for funding a non-governmental organization to run the space.
A membership scheme will be adopted for the “community living room”, with the operator responsible for ensuring the users are tenants of subdivided flats, providing them with the services they need.
