Mok Chun-yu, 36, was arrested for throwing bricks at Harcourt Road on September 29, 2019. He was convicted of rioting following trials earlier.
District Judge Stanley Chan Kwong-chi said the surrounding of the Central Government Complex was the most prosperous political and business district in Hong Kong and the riot made "the most beautiful scenery in the eyes of foreign politicians become the sad history of law-abiding Hong Kong people."
He continued that protestors on that day throw bricks and petrol bombs at police officers, and rushed to the Central Government Complex and the Legislative Council, which challenged the core of the governing power of Hong Kong.
The report said the defendant did not plan to participate in the demonstration that day but went to Wan Chai to prepare for a music performance. He took a boat to Lamma Island afterward but was blocked by the crowd on the way and arrested by police officers.
Chan refused to accept that Mok was a bystander, saying the defendant was armed with a helmet, arm protection, gas mask and other heavy equipment, but did not have musical instruments.
Chan concluded that the defendant did not plea nor submit a petition letter, showing that he had no remorse. The sentence should be deterred to warn those who advocate violence, so the defendant was eventually sentenced to five years in prison.
