"Eric and I are proud to announce the birth of our son Julian Hanscom Lu Smith," according to a post on the Consulate's Facebook page on Wednesday. "We are happy to be parents, and looking forward to returning to Hong Kong and introducing Julian to his new home."
In 2016, Smith married his Taiwanese boyfriend of nine years, Eric Lu, in San Francisco while he was US Consul in Shanghai. Their marriage photo posted on Weibo caused a stir as same-sex marriage is not allowed on the mainland nor Hong Kong.
After taking over the Consul General in Hong Kong and Macau, Smith uploaded a video on his social media, in which he said he and Lu shared the same love for movies, travel and food, and that Hong Kong and Macau are the best places for those hobbies.
