The security chief stressed that the HK$5.5 billion redevelopment plan of the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre is practical and goal-oriented, although some lawmakers questioned the lavish expenditure and the facility would be excessively opulent.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung rebutted the criticism on Monday that the reconstructed jail facility was on par with a luxury hotel.
He said some argued that the government need not be nice to the prisoners, but he believed respect has to be paid to others regardless of their identities.
Tang further stated that comparing correctional facilities with other premises like hotels is inappropriate, as a gate in the facility will cost HK$300,000 to $800,000 for replacement.
He added that the security for the facilities is essential and cannot be overlooked.
