Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau Tang-wah has criticized the U.S. for its decision to label all goods made in Hong Kong to "Made in China" starting from September 25, saying that the move is barbaric, ignores the truth and violates international regulations.
Speaking at a press briefing after meeting with major local trade chambers this afternoon, Yau stressed that products made in Hong Kong have the right to use the “Made in Hong Kong” label.
The position of the government, he said, is to resolutely oppose U.S.’s violations of World Trade Organization regulations and to take actions to safeguard own interests.
He also cited figures that the value of Hong Kong’s exports of Hong Kong-made products to the U.S. was approximately HK$3.7 billion, accounting for less than 0.1 percent of total exports, and that the industries are affected food, jewelry, pharmaceuticals and aluminum.
