The Hong Kong women's rugby sevens team faced a tough defeat against Shandong, losing 12-31 in their opening match of the National Games.
The three-day Rugby Sevens event commenced on Wednesday at the Kai Tak Stadium, where the Shandong team quickly took control of the game. They broke through Hong Kong's defense, scoring a try and conversion to establish an early 7-0 lead.
However, buoyed by home support, the Hong Kong team rallied in the first half, showcasing stronger ball possession. A well-executed play culminated in a try from Julia Mibuy, followed by a successful conversion from Stephanie Chan Chor-ki, leveling the score at 7-7.
As the match progressed into the second half, the Shandong team shifted tactics, employing a passing game that exploited gaps in Hong Kong's defense. The strategy proved effective, and Shandong scored four tries and two conversions, extending the lead to 31-7.
In the final moments of the match, the Hong Kong team managed to secure their second try, bringing the final score to 12-31.
The local team is set to face off against Sichuan in their next group match.
