Hong Kong women épée team finished seventh in Tokyo Olympics as they beat fencers from Russia Olympics Committee 28-27 in the classification match.
The Hong Kong team was knocked out in the quarter-finals as they lost 32-44 to China this morning.
The team faced USA in the first classification game. Apart from former world number one Vivian Kong Man-wai, Coco Lin Yik-hei and 20-year-old Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan, Moonie Chu Ka-mong was subbed in and played against American fencers as well, who then scored seven points for the team in two rounds.
Although the team once led in the beginning, they failed to keep the gap and USA team soon caught up with them. USA team once extended their lead by seven points and beat the Hong Kong team 42-31 after nine rounds.
Hong Kong team then faced fencers from Russia Olympics Committee in the second classification match.
The match was drew to a close 27-27 tie in the final round, and Kong last stab won the match and helped Hong Kong to finish seventh in the event.
Kong after the game thanked the support and encouragement from the public. She hoped not to disappoint others again, and said she will put her focus on the coming National Games of China and Asian Games.
Lin, on the other hand, wished to be as “tough” as other competitors. She added that she has much to learn from male foil fencing gold medalist Edgar Cheung Ka-long, saying he fearlessly regained each point even he was behind.
Also China's women épée team lost 29-38 to South Korea in the semi-final. They will play against Italy for the bronze medal.
