Classical music fans and crossover enthusiasts are in for a treat on 19 June as City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) presents an electrifying concert at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall featuring 2023 Grammy Award-winning violinist/vocalist Charles Yang and piano virtuoso/conductor Vahan Mardirossian.
The two multi-talented artists will collaborate on stage for a performance of Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Piano and Violin in D minor in the original full orchestra version. Yang will also showcase his virtuosic skills with a performance of Ravel’s Tzigane, a dazzling solo violin piece inspired by Hungarian rhapsodies.
In the second half of the concert, Mardirossian will take up the baton to conduct Copland’s Appalachian Spring: Suite, an orchestral depiction of rural American life. The programme will culminate with Yang’s electrifying vocal and instrumental arrangement of the American folk classic “House of the Rising Sun” and “Blackbird”.
Charles Yang is known for his versatility as a crossover artist, improviser, composer, and songwriter. Hailed by the Boston Globe as “a musician who plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star,” his proficiency in both classical and popular styles has been internationally lauded.
A Juilliard School of Music graduate, Yang has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In addition to his remarkable solo career, Charles Yang is a member of the acclaimed string trio, Time for Three, known for their captivating performances that blend Americana, modern pop, and classical music. The trio’s album, “Letters for the Future,” recorded in collaboration with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Xian Zhang, earned them the Grammy Award for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” in 2023.
Joining Yang is CCOHK’s chief conductor Vahan Mardirossian who enjoys a highly successful dual career as a piano soloist and recitalist. Le Monde describes his piano playing as “phenomenal.” Born in Armenia and based in Paris, he also serves as the chief conductor of the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia in Belgium.
Tickets are priced at $550, $400, and $250, with half-price concessions for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
