The yacht "Mo Han," which was donated by the Li Ka Shing Foundation and designed to act as a therapeutic platform for the handicapped, made her maiden voyage on Saturday as the new flagship of nongovernmental organization Sailability Hong Kong.
The Solaris performance cruiser is equipped with three cabins, six berths and can hold a total of 12 passengers. Built in Aquileia, Italy, the yacht arrived in Hong Kong on July 1.
Mo Han is also expected to be deployed in competitions.
Sailability's chairman Barry Hill said: "The arrival of Mo Han is a significant milestone in Sailability's history and was made possible by the generous donation of the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the support of Solarista club members who have pledged funding to cover its operation."
He added the yacht's arrival signals a "sparkling day."
With one more vessel added to its fleet, Sailability now has 37 boats in its possession.
Founded in 2009, Sailability is currently the SAR's only organization that offers sailing as a form of therapy to the handicapped.
It offers more than 3,000 individual lessons every year. By the end of last year, it had hosted a total of over 14,300 sailing trips and more than 80 percent of sailors on these trips were handicapped.
Sailability also holds certification and recreational courses for elderly people, ethnic minorities and low-income groups.
"Mo Han is the beginning of a new chapter for Sailability," Hill concluded.
As of this year, the foundation has spent over HK$30 billion in projects that cover everything from education and medical services to anti-poverty schemes.
