Science Park program empowers 'ecopreneurs'

Hang Seng Bank, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and Wofoo Social Enterprises last month held a demo day and awards presentation ceremony for the first cohort of their Future Ecopreneur Program.

The event, held on February 27, showcased 26 eco-innovation projects for an audience of industry leaders and experts. Nineteen proposals were selected for the Science Park's Ideation scheme, which offered HK$100,000 in potential seed funding.

The team of MetaGreenX received the prestigious Grand Award for their project, which aims to improve the survival rate of seedlings in remote green areas, using smart sensors and artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring and nutrient regulation.

The team said their device is being tested in Hong Kong, and that they may consider expanding their business to the mainland and overseas, with the ultimate goal of contributing to de-desertification efforts.

The Future Ecopreneur Program aims to cultivate green leaders and advance sustainable development goals through innovative solutions.

Its inaugural edition drew nearly 60 green innovation and entrepreneurship proposals from 13 tertiary institutions across Hong Kong, according to HKSTP chief executive Albert Wong Hak-keung.

"HKSTP is dedicated to nurturing green entrepreneurs, and will continue collaborating with various sectors to promote the development of green technology. The program aims to cultivate 30 to 40 green tech startups within two and a half years," Wong said.

Leo Chan Wai-ho, chairman of Wofoo SITE, pledged to nurture young, visionary green entrepreneurs, using innovative technology to drive sustainable development and help Hong Kong and the world address climate change challenges.

The green entrepreneurship program's second cohort is now open for applications. Interested innovators can register online.

Selected teams will have the opportunity to receive initial start-up funds and qualify for various incubation support programs and gain practical experience as the next generation of green technology entrepreneurs.
