Thieves stole 73 one-kilogram gold bars worth about HK$100 million from a gold shop in Peninsula Square, Hung Hom, on Friday afternoon; police arrested five suspects and recovered all the gold within hours.
Yesterday afternoon shortly before 3pm, police received a report from a woman at a gold shop on the upper floor of Peninsula Square, Sung On Street, Hung Hom.
While she was conducting a gold bar transaction with a man, three people suddenly burst in, forcibly took 73 gold bars totaling 73 kilograms, and fled.
A fourth accomplice waited outside. The group escaped in two waiting private cars.
At current gold prices, the stolen bars are valued at approximately US$12 million (~HK$100 million).
Due to the huge amount involved, the Kowloon West Regional Crime Unit launched an intensive investigation using big data and security camera footage across districts.
Within 24 hours, officers arrested four men and one woman, aged 31 to 58, in Central and Tai Po on suspicion of theft.
All 73 one-kilogram gold bars were successfully recovered during the operation.
One arrested suspect is reportedly a former male partner of the gold shop, and police have not ruled out a commercial dispute motive.
All suspects remain in custody for further questioning.
