The University of Hong Kong (HKU) ranked seventh in Education Studies in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026, slipping one place from last year but remaining the only Hong Kong institution in the global top 10.
The ranking evaluates universities across 11 subject areas, with assessment on 18 performance indicators covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
Asia’s universities continued their climb, with the National University of Singapore rising to joint 10th in Business and Economics, alongside China’s Tsinghua University at third and Peking University at seventh.
China also entered the top 10 for the first time in Computer Science and Physical Sciences, securing seven top-10 spots overall, up from four last year.
In Life Sciences, NUS broke into the top 20 at 19th, joining Peking University at 12th and Tsinghua at 13th.
Globally, Oxford led in Medical and Health and Computer Science, Cambridge topped Psychology, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology claimed three subjects – Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences. Stanford ranked first in Education and Law.
Three disciplines at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have stood out in the rankings, with Computer Science as well as Business and Economics both placed among the world’s top 30, while Engineering retained its position within the global top 50.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University saw six disciplines ranked in the global top 100, including Business and Economics at 25th, Engineering at 43rd, Social Sciences at 52nd, Computer Science at 70th, Arts and Humanities at 77th, and Physical Sciences at 99th.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong Baptist University has six subject areas ranked among the world’s top 200.
