Hong Kong has unveiled the Chinese Medicine (CM) Development Blueprint, setting out eight major goals and 20 corresponding initiatives aimed at positioning the city as a strategic gateway for the global development of Chinese medicine.
The blueprint, announced in this year’s Policy Address, follows the recent opening of the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong and the launch of operations at the permanent premises of the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute in early December.
One of the key objectives is to enhance clinical services in Chinese medicine. Proposed measures include clearly defining the role of CM within the healthcare system, improving service quality and clinical outcomes, and leveraging technology to upgrade CM services.
The blueprint also seeks to establish a cross-disciplinary service framework by further integrating Chinese medicine into the broader healthcare system through institutional collaboration, while strengthening its role in primary healthcare.
Talent development is another major focus. Under the blueprint, Hong Kong aims to lead professional advancement in the CM sector by raising qualification requirements, building a more comprehensive training system, and empowering the industry to support continuous professional development.
The blueprint further highlights efforts to help Chinese medicine “go global” by promoting Hong Kong’s CM service model and fostering international cooperation.
This includes advancing the international application of CM standards and testing technologies, as well as developing Hong Kong into a global hub for information exchange and innovative collaboration in Chinese medicine.
Other goals outlined in the blueprint include enhancing CM quality standards, driving innovation in scientific research and industry development, and promoting Chinese medicine culture.
