BYD tops Hong Kong EV sales as electric cars grab 71pc of new private vehicle market
Electric vehicles made up 71.04 percent of new private car registrations in Hong Kong during the first nine months of 2025, according to the latest Transport Department figures, with BYD leading the market.
Total new private car registrations from January to September reached 34,540, a 3.34 percent decline compared to the same period last year. Within that total, 24,537 were electric vehicles, representing a slight 0.69 percent year-on-year dip in EV market share.
BYD dominated the rankings with 6,878 units sold in the first three quarters, a 40.86 percent increase year-on-year. Tesla followed with 6,401 units, down 14.45 percent. Zeekr secured third place with 1,548 units, marking its first entry into the top three.
Other brands in the top ten included BMW (1,429 units), XPENG (1,187 units), Toyota (1,179 units), GAC AION (1,003 units), Honda (954 units), MG (851 units) and Mercedes-Benz (790 units).
In September alone, new private car registrations rose 59.12 percent year-on-year to 4,678, with EVs surging 94.83 percent to claim a 75.72 percent market share. BYD led monthly sales with 920 units, a 121.69 percent increase, followed by Tesla with 853 units and Zeekr with 546 units.
