In a remarkable display of perseverance, Christine Fong Kwok-shan, the chairperson of Professional Power and Sai Kung District Councilor, has achieved a decisive victory in her sixth attempt to secure a seat in the Legislative Council (LegCo).
Fong, who has been a familiar face in the Tseung Kwan O community, garnered an impressive 58,828 votes in the New Territories South East constituency during Sunday’s election, earning her the moniker “Queen of Votes.”
Making her sixth run for a LegCo seat, Fong leveraged her years of local presence in Tseung Kwan O to earn an impressive 58,828 votes, earning her the title of the "Queen of Votes."
"No miracles, just years of work"
Reflecting on her long journey, Fong expressed gratitude for the support she received from her community and her dedicated team. "It hasn’t been easy all these years," she stated, sharing that her victory is a testament to years of hard work and commitment to serving the residents.
Fong emphasized that her high vote count was "not a miracle but the result of persistence," attributing her success to her consistent efforts to earn citizens' trust through down-to-earth service.
Despite her triumph, Fong revealed that her victory was bittersweet, as her parents, who had been instrumental in her previous campaigns by displaying her posters, did not live to see her success.
She described the road ahead as "an arduous task," particularly as many families still grieve losses from the recent Tai Po fire.
Fong pledged to maintain close ties with the community and plans to prioritize eliminating bid-rigging in building maintenance, reforming the system, and enhancing fire safety.
Additionally, she advocates for increased public education for owners' corporations and proposes government funding for them to hire independent consultants to monitor contractors.
Backed by prominent figures
Fong, who received over 15 nominations including from former Executive Council convener Bernard Charnwut Chan and veteran entertainer Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun, further reflects her strong community ties and dedicated work ethic.
Regarding her ability to serve the entire constituency without major party support, she noted that Professional Power functions as a think tank with over 100 members, providing valuable insights from both professionals and the public.
Chris Ip Ngo-tung from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) secured the second seat in the New Territories South East constituency with 26,250 votes, rounding out a competitive election in the region that encompasses approximately 756,100 residents and 440,190 registered voters.
