Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said on her social media on Wednesday that she hoped the affected residents are safe and can settle down.
She said in her social media that she visited “Good House”, one of the transitional housing projects run by the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention in Tai Po on Tuesday, to meet a Wang Fuk Court couple surnamed Chan.
Ho said the couple had experienced a major fire years ago at the Shun Lee Resettlement Area and the recent Tai Po fire had brought them back those memories, moving them to tears.
The couple told Ho that the support from the government, NGOs, neighbors, and all sectors of society has increased significantly compared to the past.
They thanked everyone for their concern and felt grateful simply to have a place to settle and for their family to be safe.
They also hoped to encourage other Wang Fuk Court residents, urging mutual support through hardship and moving forward together.
Ho added that as of noon on Wednesday, a cumulative 680 households comprising 1,613 people have moved into transitional housing units, and another 59 households comprising 152 people have moved into Hong Kong Housing Society units. About 1,400 units across the two categories remain available.
She noted that residents of Wang Fuk Court interested in transitional housing can visit the Housing Bureau website to see the latest recommended projects and contact numbers.
“We will continue to work with all sectors of society to fully support Wang Fuk Court residents and help everyone through this difficult time,” she said.
