Amid the devastating Tai Po fire that claimed over 140 lives and left countless families homeless, a cross-border network of strangers has united to bring solace to a young victim grappling with the loss of her cherished treasure -- a limited-edition Minnie Mouse plush toy.
The heartfelt mission began on Saturday (Nov 29) when a concerned online user took to social media, pleading for help to find the beloved stuffed toy that a girl in the tragedy had lost.
The girl, a resident of Wang Fuk Court, had received the plush toy years ago as a gift purchased online, and it was the only one available in Taiwan after her parents searched through the internet, which held a special place in her heart.
With the toy long discontinued, the loss felt even more profound, leaving the young girl bereft of a companion she had grown up with.
In a bid to harness the power of the internet for good, the poster of the appeal reached out to the community, hoping for a miracle that could soothe the little girl's heart.
A bittersweet victory across borders
Within hours, a Hongkonger living in Japan discovered an identical plush doll listed for sale on a second-hand marketplace.
"I saw the doll was on sale and just went for it. We can figure out how to ship it to Hong Kong after it arrives," the kind-hearted Japan-based Hongkonger shared, illustrating the remarkable spirit of generosity that has come to define this effort.
The online community further mobilized, with numerous volunteers offering to help send the plush from Japan to its young owner in Hong Kong via the comments section.
The poster expressed profound gratitude for the assistance, adding "I hope when the doll reaches the girl, it can bring her a little bit of happiness."
However, the poster is also concerned that the gift might trigger painful memories of the trauma.
"We don't know what her reaction will be, but we do know that the small girl's greatest sadness was losing her beloved dolls and the childhood playground," the poster wrote.
Apart from the Minnie Mouse doll, the search is now underway for the girl's other missing treasure that was lost in the flames.
