Fresh from defending her women’s road race gold, 24-year-old Ceci Lee Sze-wing headlines Hong Kong’s 25-rider squad in five days of track cycling starting Thursday at the Tseung Kwan O Velodrome, entering the omnium and Madison while the team pursues an ambitious four-medal haul.
The 24-year-old said that in the last Games, she was regarded as a “dark horse” and approached the competition with a learning mindset.
After her disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics last year, she resolved to make changes.
Winning the road race this year has been a significant encouragement, proving that her training efforts were not in vain and that she is on the right track.
Lee added that competitors from the mainland are very strong. To prepare for the Games, she has increased her training hours, specifically improving her physical fitness while addressing weaknesses.
She also adjusted her mindset, aiming to transform pressure into motivation and performing to the best on the track.
Lee said the road race has many variables, but she was able to overcome those challenges while targeting medals in the upcoming track events.
She also expressed hope that the audience will “pack the venue” to cheer for the Hong Kong team.
Meanwhile, head coach Hervé Dagorne reports peak form across the roster and has benchmarked four medals based on recent global results.
With earlier time trials yielding nothing, he now banks on a surprise breakthrough—bronze, silver, or gold—to hit the mark.
He said athletes from the mainland are in excellent form, which could add challenges for the Hong Kong team to secure medals.
Nonetheless, he believed the team is ready to compete for Hong Kong, with a focus on refining training details and strategies, stressing that perfection is necessary to achieve medals.
