In a show of unity and economic support, government officials kicked off the 76th National Day celebrations by joining the public for discounted meals at local eateries.
Following the flag-raising ceremony and a reception on Wednesday morning, Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing posted on social media about a Hong Kong-style breakfast at a Wan Chai cha chaan teng, which featured a 30 percent discount for the day.
Joining him for the meal were Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun, Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan, and Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai.
The group ordered their favourite breakfast sets -- including satay beef noodles, macaroni soup with ham and pork with pickled mustard greens noodle soup -- each served with freshly baked toast and a large egg.
With the discount, their total bill for four meals came to just HK$126, down from HK$180.
"The taste was pretty good–what a fantastic deal," Cheuk remarked.
He observed that the restaurant was bustling with customers, many of whom took the opportunity to enjoy a hearty and affordable breakfast on National Day.
Cheuk expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from the business community, noting a record-breaking participation of over 3,000 restaurants in the catering sector.
He encouraged everyone to take advantage of the citywide offers and enjoy time with friends and family, making the most of the National Day festivities.
To mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, thousands of restaurants and retailers are offering a series of festive discounts, ranging from 30 percent off at eateries to buy-one-get-one-free hotel buffets.
