Hong Kong government officials, led by Acting Chief Executive Eric Chan Kwok-ki, attended an official ceremony on Wednesday morning for the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The event was held at 8am at the City Hall Memorial Garden, featuring a rendition of the national anthem and the raising of both the national and HKSAR regional flags.
Following a rifle volley by the Police Rifle Squad, attendees observed a two-minute silence before Chan led representatives from various sectors in bowing in tribute.
Notable attendees included Secretary General of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LOCPG) Wang Songmiao, Deputy Head of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR Chen Feng, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong SAR Li Yongsheng, and Deputy Commander-in-chief of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison Tan Zhiwei.
The ceremony also saw participation from District Council representatives, Heung Yee Kuk members, veterans, uniformed groups, youth representatives, and secondary school students.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress designated September 3 as the victory day of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression in February 2014.
Since then, the HKSAR government has held an official ceremony each year on this date to commemorate the victory.
