The Department of Health has significantly enhanced chikungunya virus testing capabilities, with plans to implement these services in public hospitals following five imported cases recorded in one week.
Director of Health Ronald Lam Man-kin noted that the current capacity can process hundreds of samples daily, delivering results within approximately four hours.
He stated that the department is collaborating with the Hospital Authority to increase reagent reserves and has also engaged various private service providers to prepare for "severe circumstances”.
Speaking at a program, Lam noted that the chikungunya virus detected in Hong Kong are observed with frequent genetic mutations and rapid transmission.
He also warned of the risk of increasing imported cases in Hong Kong, as mosquito vectors are expanding from tropical and subtropical regions into temperate zones due to global warming and increased tourism activity from nearby regions.
The government will remain on high alert to prevent potential local transmission caused by inadequate mosquito prevention and control measures, he added.
Meanwhile, Lam mentioned that the health checks for travelers conducted at the port are inadequate, as the incubation period lasts a maximum of 12 days.
The authorities will enhance public awareness campaigns for travelers, reminding them to monitor their health conditions, he said, while also implementing comprehensive mosquito prevention and control measures in cross-border areas.
