Ten former Hong Kong bowling team members will come out of retirement to represent the city as amateur athletes in the upcoming National Games, with the event set to take place from August 22 to 24 at Kai Tak Sports Park.
Among them is Michael Mak Cheuk-yin, a 2017 World Bowling Championships men’s trios gold medalist, who has teamed up with Rickle Kam Siu-lun, Leo Tse Chung-yin, Daniel Tse Lok-sang and Boco Wong to clinch victory in the selection event, securing their spot to represent Hong Kong in the men’s division.
Recognizing their skilled competitors from mainland, Mak said he won’t rely on past achievements but instead focus on maintaining a composed mindset.
His teammate Kam believes the National Games presents an opportunity to reignite bowling’s popularity in Hong Kong and attract broader participation.
In the women’s division, former Hong Kong representatives Milki Ng Tsz-yin, Chan Shuk-han, Zoe Tam Shun-yee, Chloe Lee Wing-yan and Gigi Leung Chi-yung will compete.
Ng recalled that representing Hong Kong in major tournaments used to be stressful, but this time, reuniting with old teammates under the city’s banner feels more unifying. She hopes to keep the sport’s legacy alive.
The bowling finals will take place at Kai Tak Sports Park’s Bowling Centre from August 22-24. Hong Kong’s men’s and women’s teams will compete against at least nine other squads each across individual, doubles and team competitions, with team selections determining participants. A total of six gold medals will be up for grabs.
Separately, the World Games 2025 Chengdu kicks off tomorrow (Thu). Athletes, coaching and supporting team of the Hong Kong, China Delegation left for the event yesterday to begin final preparations.
“Enjoying semi-home field advantage, our athletes are fully prepared and look forward to performing at their best against top athletes from around the world,” said Wong Po-kee, the delegation's Chef de Mission and honorary deputy secretary general of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.
