Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Sunday addressed the controversy surrounding bottled water provided by two mainland brands at government offices, one of which reportedly failed quality standards six times.
His remarks came after concerns from civil servants across Hong Kong Island and the New Territories regarding drinking water quality under the new mainland supplier contract, which took effect on June 23.
The city leader stated that the bottled water at government offices complies with “international standards”, expressing confidence in the tendering system. Meanwhile, Lee reiterated that the government places great importance on drinking water safety, as all bidders are required to provide certification for water quality from independent laboratories.
He emphasized that suppliers must provide certification documentation upon request at any time, with authorities conducting random product inspections as well.
The contract will be immediately terminated for any supplier failing to meet standards," he added.
