Dancer Mo Li Kai-yin has filed a writ in the High Court last Friday (Jul 25), seeking compensation from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and 11 related companies after suffering severe injuries from a falling screen during a MIRROR concert in 2022.
This lawsuit follows a successful compensation case against his former employer, Studiodanz Company Limited, filed in the District Court last year.
According to reports, the case has been separated into three cases, which are scheduled for a Check List Review Hearing on January 9, 2026.
Details of the three cases
The first case involves seven defendants, which were responsible for stage design and engineering coordination, including Engineering ImpactLimited, Infinity Project Management Limited, Hip Hing Loong Stage Engineering Company Limited, United Technical Services Limited, Lo Chung Kai Kenneth and Yiu Yuk Ying trading as C.A.N.I, Furgo (Hong Kong) Limited, and Secretary for Justice for and on behalf of Director of Leisure and Cultural Services.
The second case includes four defendants, which were involved in the planning of the concert: The Clan Too Limited, Studiodanz Company Limited, Hong Kong Innotech Media Production Limited and In Technical Productions Limited(ITP).
Meanwhile, the third case targets Dongguan Yaolong Stage Production Co., Ltd, which designed and manufactured the suspension system for the LED screen.
According to the writ, the incident occurred during the "MIRROR.WE.ARE Live Concert 2022" around 10.35pm on July 28, 2022 at the Hong Kong Coliseum, where the 500-kilogram LED screen suddenly fell, injuring Li while he was performing as a backup dancer.
Due to the negligence of the 12 defendants, Li is seeking compensation for the catastrophic injury, loss, and damage he suffered, including interest and court expenses.
Safety concerns with the mechanical components of suspension system
Three contractors involved in the concert previously faced fraud charges for allegedly making false declarations about the weight of stage equipment in their performance application to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, but they were acquitted in May of this year.
During the trial, judge May Chung Ming-sun highlighted significant safety deficiencies exhibited by Dongguan Yaolong Stage Production Co., Ltd. in the design and installation of the winch system, where the suspension rope not meeting required safety standards, indicating a lack of quality in their collaboration for the concert.
