Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho has warned that Hong Kong is grappling with a severe building aging crisis, with approximately 29,000 private buildings over 30 years old—more than 10,000 of which exceed half a century in age.
Speaking at the launch ceremony of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors’ "Building Doctor" program, Linn said the government is committed to addressing structural risks through funding schemes, technical support, and mandatory inspection regimes.
To tackle the growing safety concerns, she said authorities have intensified inspections of high-risk buildings and carried out emergency repairs where necessary. The government has also implemented mandatory building and window inspection schemes to promote regular maintenance and preventive measures.
Echoing Linn’s concerns, Director of Buildings Johnny Ho Chun-hung highlighted the challenges faced by property owners, many of whom lack the technical knowledge, experience, or financial resources to undertake necessary repairs.
He called on industry professionals to provide expert guidance and objective advice to help building owners comply with safety standards.
