The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has appointed Charles Ng Wang-wai as the University's Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, effective August 1.
Ng will drive the University's initiatives to deepen international partnerships, expand global alumni networks, and advance institutional strategies that elevate HKUST's worldwide influence in research and education.
He will also oversee fundraising efforts to support these goals.
Currently serving as Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School and Vice-Chairman of the HKUST Foundation, Ng joined HKUST in 1995 and previously held positions as Associate Vice-President for Research and Development, Associate Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies, and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering.
Under his leadership as Dean, HKUST has attracted the highest number of Hong Kong PhD Fellowship awardees since the scheme's inception in 2009, drawing top talent from over 50 countries worldwide.
Ng is also an internationally acclaimed expert in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, specializing in unsaturated soil mechanics, eco-geotechnics, and debris flow mitigation and landslide prevention.
His groundbreaking research has also earned him a place among the 2024 Stanford University's list of top 2 percent Scientists Worldwide in Geological & Geomatics Engineering and Civil Engineering.
He stands as the youngest scholar ranked in the top five for career-long impact in these fields.
