Earlier, customs were alerted to suspected short-weight activities in the area. As part of their investigation into these alleged illegal activities, officers disguised as merchants sold copper to the trader yesterday (Feb 26).
It was discovered that the trader used inaccurate scales, which showed the weight of the copper to be at least 24 percent less than its actual weight. This deception led vendors to accept a lower recycling price.
The trader is suspected of violating the Weights and Measures Ordinance. Under this ordinance, using fraudulent weighing equipment can result in a fine of up to HK$25,000 and imprisonment for up to six months.
The investigation is still ongoing.
A customs spokesperson stated that to combat short-weight practices, customs will increase spot checks and enforce strict measures to ensure a fair trading environment.
