The TLB highlighted that the rail system would mainly run on elevated viaducts that are separated from road traffic, and it is technically more feasible than the previously planned heavy rail system given the hilly terrains and constraints.
The South Island Line (West) project will span about 7.5 kilometers from Wong Chuk Hang Station to HKU Station, with stops at Queen Mary Hospital, Cyberport, Wah Fu, Tin Wan and Aberdeen. The estimated travel time is around 20 minutes.
A segment of the route from Queen Mary Hospital to the University of Hong Kong will be constructed as a tunnel because of the hilly terrain.
The detailed planning and design are scheduled to begin next year, with construction works expected to start in 2027 to tally with the timetable for the new population intake of the Wah Fu Estate Redevelopment. However, the expected completion date is yet to be announced.
The South Island Line (West) project was initially proposed in 2014, and revised in late 2023 to abandon the heavy rail system due to the undulation of the terrain in the area.
