Hypefest came to Hong Kong for the first time from 9 to 10 November at the Central Harbourfront Event Space. It brings a one-stop experience in cultural and artistic trends combined with food and fun through a colorful potpourri of local and international music performances, a pop-up market of exclusive products, a food village and innovative carnival game experiences.
First held in October 2018 in Brooklyn, New York, the two-day contemporary cultural event attracted over 10,000 festival-goers. Last year’s event, held in Aranya, Qinhuangdao, welcomed over 15,000 attendees with performers including Hong Kong’s MC Jin and Jackson Wang.
A little known fact about Hypebeast, the organizer, is that, as the world’s leading contemporary fashion and culture media platform, it is in fact headquartered in Hong Kong. Building on its previous success in the US and Mainland, Hypebeast is proud to present Hypefest in Hong Kong for the first time, assembling celebrities, industry leaders and loyal fans from home and abroad at the picturesque Central Harbourfront. Hypefest Hong Kong 2024 has also received strong support from the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), which has been supporting a host of large-scale international events to attract visitors from all over the world to come for an immersive experience.
Raymond Chan, General Manager, Event and Product Development of the HKTB, remarks that by supporting the hosting of Hypefest in Hong Kong, the HKTB hopes that visitors and locals alike will appreciate Hong Kong’s multi-cultural experience as this dynamic event delivers them to the forefront of lifestyle, culture, music and creativity.
Chan points out that a number of pop culture events have been held since the city’s business returned to normal in early 2023, fully demonstrating the capability and vitality of Hong Kong as an events capital. By hosting mega events, the city enriches its offerings in tourism attractions and boosts its reputation as a world-class tourist destination and ‘Asia’s Events Capital’, he explains.
Chan also points out that HKTB has been promoting Hypefest via online and offline platforms. Online, the highlights of Hypefest are posted on HKTB’s Discover HK website and official social platforms. Meanwhile, to attract visitors and local participation, Hypefest promotional videos are played in tourist hotspots, such as tourist information centres. At the venue, HKTB has set up a ‘Hello Hong Kong’ booth that highlights Hong Kong’s uniqueness by skillfully merging contemporary urban elements with traditional Chinese calligraphy. “It’s a vivid demonstration of how Hong Kong serves as a melting pot for Chinese and Western cultures,” he remarks.
Kevin Ma, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Hypebeast Group, emphasises that each Hypefest strives to showcase the unique culture, history and ambience of the chosen venue. Hypefest Hong Kong 2024 aims to connect different brands, artists, cultural and creative talents. “It presents Hong Kong’s multiculturalism to a global audience, accentuates Hong Kong’s unique identity and helps promote the flourishing development of local cultural and creative industries,” he elaborates.
Ma notes that the two-day Hypefest Hong Kong 2024 has attracted a large number of locals and international tourists, benefitting industries like hotels, restaurants, transportation and retail. It also cements Hong Kong’s status as an east-meets-west cultural hub, and offers an opportunity for local budding creatives, artists and designers to display their talents, exchange ideas and potentially expand their business.
Ma emphasises that supporting emerging brands and local creatives is one of the event’s focuses. Hypefest has collaborated with select brands from Hong Kong, Mainland and Japan to create unique interactive experiences with opportunities to win exclusive branded limited-edition merchandise and prizes, offering festival-goers an unforgettable weekend of fun and festivities.
