The party highlighted the transformative potential of the 80,000-square-foot Kai Tak makeshift hospital, which was left idle and going to waste, could now be reimagined as a vibrant international art and sports park.
They believed the Kai Tak area would be suitable for hosting mega events, and the redevelopment could significantly benefit arts development and foster youth entrepreneurship as well as global exchanges.
The party stated that the temporary quarantine facilities could be turned into an arts and sports park and divided into six functional areas, including a youth cultural and creativity area, an intangible cultural area, an environmental protection area, a sports and health area, an international exchange area, as well as a cultural and art park.
DAB lawmaker Starry Lee Wai-king, who is also Hong Kong’s sole delegate to the National People’s Congress, said the park could create synergy with nearby Kai Tak Cruise Terminal and Kai Tak Sports Park to develop into a cultural and creative tourism area and turn into a new tourist hotspot.
However, DAB raised the lack of transport facilities and the sustainability of finances as two main issues hindering the plan. They urged the government to improve the transport situation in the area and to lobby private corporations to provide funding for the development.
In addition to exploring Hong Kong, international tourists can take a short ferry ride to the vibrant city of Macao.
