A 47-year-old school bus driver was run over by his own vehicle after he fell out of it on Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries later that night.
The school bus was exiting a parking lot in Wong Tai Sin at around 4 pm yesterday when the tragedy happened. It is understood that the driver fell out of his vehicle when he tried to tap his Octopus card at the gate.
The driver fell out of the open door as he leaned outwards and was ran over as the vehicle skidded forward.
He suffered severe injuries to his pelvis and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 9 pm the same day.
The driver Choi is survived by two children currently in secondary school, with his divorced wife returning from the mainland to take care of them.
She said Choi had been working as a driver for many years since they knew each other. As the family breadwinner, he had a close relationship with the children despite spending little time with them.
"Even though he worked alone and did not spend much time with the children, they were still close," the sorrowful ex-wife said.
After the sudden loss of their father, the mother said the children have a hard time coping as they are crying and not talking.
She added that the school has also called to offer condolences, saying that there are social workers who can provide emotional counseling for them.
