Cui Jianchun, the former Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu welcomed the appointment of Cui on Wednesday and praised Cui – a veteran diplomat – for his significant experience in overseas assignments.
Lee also said that with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (OCMFA), Hong Kong has been developing its external affairs in accordance with the Basic Law to foster its external exchanges and co-operation and enhancing its international impact and competitiveness.
“The OCMFA has also rendered consular protection and appropriate assistance to Hong Kong citizens in distress overseas,” Lee noted.
A number of young public officers from Hong Kong have worked in the United Nations as Chinese personnel in recent years to contribute to the development of the country and Hong Kong with the strong support of the Central Government and assistance of the OCMFA, he added.
Lee said he firmly believes that under Cui’s leadership, the OCMFA will continue to work closely with the SAR government in taking forward different areas of work.
“The SAR government will continue to dovetail with the overall strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and accurately explain Hong Kong’s latest developments to overseas audiences, telling good stories of Hong Kong and the ‘one country, two systems’ principle.”
