Motorists will no longer have to stop to pay the toll when using the Cross-Harbour Tunnel from Sunday morning (July 23) under the latest expansion of the new electronic auto-toll system, transport authorities announced on Thursday.
Transport officials said access to the Hung Hom tunnel going both ways will not be available from 4 am to 5 am that day to allow transition to the eToll system.
The Cross-Harbour Tunnel, after the implementation of the new e-toll system, will be reduced to four lanes from the original eight, while all booths and auto toll lanes will be done away with.
The Transport Department said they have already enhanced the e-toll system, with the system capable of handling 150,000 vehicles passing through every hour to handle traffic at the Hung Hom crossing - the busiest of three cross-harbor tunnels.
The Cross-Harbour Tunnel will be the fourth government tunnel to have adopted the system, following Tsing Sha Control Area in April and Shing Mun and Lion Rock tunnels in May.
Next up in the HKeToll plans is Western and Eastern crossings in August, with exact dates to be announced in due course.
