Work-hard-play-hard lifestyle makes sleepless Hong Kong irreplaceable, says John Lee

Hong Kong’s biggest attraction is the city’s “Work hard, play hard” lifestyle, said Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, adding that living in the SAR will never be boring. 

In an interview with Hong Kong China News Agency on Wednesday, Lee said the city checks every box on his list to live a colorful life. He added people can also enjoy so many things in Hong Kong as the city runs non-stop. 

“It will only take you half an hour to go for a hike or to visit a country park… No matter what time it is, you can eat whatever you want and do whatever things you like.” 

Lee pointed out that Hong Kong is a city integrated with arts and culture and is also a place where people from different racial backgrounds can get along with each other in a friendly way. 

“Therefore, Hong Kong cannot be replaced with another city,” he said. 

The city is known for its high degree of transparency and citizens’ law-abiding awareness as well, Lee noted. 

He added that the city’s exceptional geographical location also allows others to enter mainland cities and their markets. The SAR will continue to connect mainland China and international society, Lee also said. 

On another note, the city leader said the legislation work on Article 23 of the Basic Law must be completed this year or the next year at the latest. 

“We have set up a timetable for the legislation work, and the work must be done within my term as the Chief Executive. We can definitely finish the work in the next year at the latest,” according to Lee. 

He added he had instructed the Security Bureau and the Department of Justice to refer to laws in countries that practice common law on targeting certain crimes and offenses.
