Punish public doctors who strike, urges Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee. The Executive Council member and lawmaker says doctors who joined the strike earlier this year should not be qualified as specialists by the Medical Council.
Ip, from the New People's Party, yesterday proposed penalizing medics who went on strike in January to pressure the government to close all Hong Kong-mainland boundary crossings when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out on the mainland.
Speaking at the Legislative Council's Finance Committee, Ip asked the Hospital Authority to hand down disciplinary punishment to medics who went on strike.
"The Medical Council should reject the registration of doctors who were on strike and have yet to be qualified as specialists and condemn them for not putting patients first," she said.
Health services lawmaker Joseph Lee Kok-long criticized her for smearing medics in a Cultural Revolution-esque manner.
Medical sector lawmaker Pierre Chan Pui-yin said medics have always protected citizens with their lives.
