Academic Cheung Kie-chung, 56, who was convicted last week of the murder of his wife Tina Chan Wai-man, was sentenced today to life imprisonment.
A High Court jury convicted him of murdering Chan Man-wai in August 2018 at their Hong Kong University residence at Wei Lun Hall. He was also convicted of preventing lawful burial following the murder, two years ago.
The jury voted 5-2 to convict him.
The University of Hong Kong professor had strangled his wife of 30 years in their home and concealed the body in a wooden box.
Judge Anthea Pang Po-kam said the killing was cold blooded, although the professor had been described as a “gentle and friendly” man.
Cheung pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted manslaughter.
