The new coronavirus can spread via touch in addition to contact through respiratory droplets, while asymptomatic patients can also transmit the disease, the National Health Commission has warned.
"Respiratory droplets is the major transmission route. But one can catch the disease by touch too," the commission stated in a document sent to regional health institutions on late Monday.
The incubation period for the virus is between three and seven days usually, and no longer than two weeks in extreme cases.
Most infected patients suffer from mild symptoms, but conditions for the elderly and those with chronic diseases may be more serious, according to the document.
At a press conference by the commission yesterday, Li Xingwang, a member of its team of medical experts, said those who do not have fever may still transmit the disease.
"Some patients do not have obvious symptoms like fever. They may cough occasionally or feel exhausted. Even such patients can transmit the virus to some extent. It makes our effort to stop the disease more difficult and complicated," Li said.
As for respiratory droplets, Li said it may transmit the virus within a distance of one to two meters. People were reminded to wear masks and minimize close contact with others.
"This disease may transmit by touch. If your hand came into contact with the virus, rubbing your eyes with your hands may cause infection too," said Li who reminded people to wash hands frequently.
In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, top expert Zhong Nanshan estimated that the spread of the new coronavirus will peak in a week to 10 days.
Zhong said it would be appropriate to isolate suspected cases for 10 to 14 days. Those who did not fall ill within the period will be fine. Even if they travel to other cities upon the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, it won't trigger a surge in the number of patients, he said.
