Veteran South Korean actor Song Young-kyu was found dead on Monday in a car parked at a residential complex in Yongin, south of Seoul, at the age of 55.
According to reports, a passerby discovered Song unconscious in the vehicle and alerted authorities around 8 am.
Preliminary investigations suggest there is no sign of foul play were involved and no suicide note was found.
The authorities have stated the investigation is ongoing.
Controversies surrounding drunk driving incident
Song's passing comes amid controversies surrounding his arrest for drunk driving in June, when his blood alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Reports indicate that Song drove himself home in Youngin after dining and drinking with acquaintances in the Giheung District.
Following the incident, Song stepped down from a role in the play "Shakespeare in Love."
Meanwhile, two of his current dramas, "The Defects" and "The Winning Try," announced they would edit his scenes to minimize his appearance due to public backlash.
Career highlights
Born in 1970, Song was a familiar face in South Korean dramas and films, making his debut in 1994 with the children's musical "Wizard Mureul."
Song participated in various projects across theatre, film, and television, including the popular dramas "Reply 1988," "Stove League," and "Hyena."
Notably, his appearance in the action comedy “Extreme Job” in 2019, was one of the highest-grossing films in Korean cinema.
In addition to his screen work, Song had been serving as a special professor in the Department of Acting Arts at Semyung University since 2021.
