As the Lunar New Year approaches, Macao once again comes alive with colour, creativity and contagious festive cheer. Streets glow with lantern light, the air hums with anticipation, and the city’s unique blend of heritage and youthful energy takes centre stage. This Chinese New Year, Macao invites residents and visitors alike to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse through a spectacular series of events that combine tradition, innovation and heartfelt community spirit.
From dazzling drone shows and dragon parades to creative markets led by the city’s next generation of entrepreneurs, the festive programme offers something for every traveller — whether you are seeking auspicious blessings, artistic inspiration, or simply a joyful way to begin the year on a high note.
Night-time Spectacle: 2026 Chinese New Year Drones and Fireworks Displays
One of the most electrifying highlights of this year’s festivities is the 2026 Chinese New Year Drones and Fireworks Displays. For the first time in Macao, pyrotechnic artistry will be woven together with formations of 3,888 synchronised drones, dancing above the waters near Macau Tower against a backdrop of music and laser effects.
The skies will sparkle with spectacular aerial imagery during three sessions:
- 19 February 2026 (the 3rd day of Chinese New Year), at 9.45 p.m.
- 23 February 2026 (the 7th day), at 9 p.m.
- 3 March 2026 (the 15th day — Lantern Festival), at 9 p.m.
Each show is expected to last around 15 minutes, filling the night with festive energy and wishes for good fortune in the year ahead. Viewing points around the city, from Anim’Arte NAM VAN to the waterfront near the Macao Science Center and along Avenida do Oceano in Taipa, will play music to accompany the show for a fully immersive celebration.
Cultural Parades with Warm Wishes
Early in the holiday period, Macao’s streets will come alive with the Gigantic Golden Dragon Parade, part of the 2026 Chinese New Year Activities taking place on the 1st and 2nd days of Chinese New Year — 17 February 11a.m. – 1p.m. and 1:30p.m. – 6:45p.m. and 18 February 10:30a.m. – 6p.m.
Vibrant dragon dance troupes, auspicious mascots and the beloved Macao tourism mascot MAK MAK will wind through local neighbourhoods, delivering warm wishes and distinctive performances designed to fill communities with festive energy. Whether you’re strolling through residential districts or gathering in lively marketplaces, these performances offer a joyful expression of shared celebration.
ZAPE Gallop Gala: A Community Celebration
Macao’s festive spirit doesn’t stop at traditional performances. From 13 February to 1 March 4p.m. to 10p.m., the ZAPE Gallop Gala will animate the area around Rua de Cantão and Rua de Pequim in ZAPE.
This engaging street event celebrates both the New Year and Valentine’s Day with creative installations, interactive activities and vibrant visuals. It’s a wonderful example of how Macao infuses community life with festive energy, encouraging visitors and locals alike to take part in moments of discovery and joy.
Youthful Creativity at Rua do Cunha
A short distance away, along the charming pedestrian-friendly Rua do Cunha in Taipa, the Macao Chill Market: Macau Student Chinese New Year Market — will run from today to 23 February 2026.
This market showcases the creative flair of Macao’s university students, who bring fresh ideas and imaginative designs to life. Visitors can explore a colourful collection of handcrafted goods, original artworks, Chinese New Year accessories and lifestyle products — each reflecting youthful creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit.
More than a place to browse and buy, the market invites participation. Throughout its run, visitors can join in hands-on activities like writing festive couplets and crafting keepsakes that embody prosperity, happiness and fresh beginnings — all essential themes of the Lunar New Year.
Parade for Celebration of the Year of the Horse
Adding another layer of celebration is the Parade for Celebration of the Year of the Horse, a visual feast of colour, movement and creativity. This spectacle takes place on 19 February 8p.m. – 9:45p.m. and 28 February 2026 8p.m. – 9:30p.m.
The parade reflects the horse’s symbolic energy — galloping forward with optimism, strength and momentum — beautifully aligning with Macao’s vibrant cultural spirit and future ambitions. This year, the celebration unfolds along two routes, spanning the vicinity of Sai Van Lake and extending into the northern district, bringing festive cheer to different corners of the city. Around 1,300 performers from Macao, Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Philippines and Korea will take part, alongside a fleet of 17 splendid floats, creating a dynamic international showcase of colour, artistry and cross-cultural exchange.
Traditional Meets Contemporary
Chinese New Year in Macao is a festival where tradition meets innovation. While dragon dances and lion troupes honour age-old customs, events like the drone and fireworks displays show how the city blends tradition with contemporary creativity. The result is a celebration that feels timeless yet exhilaratingly modern.
Special promotions and travel incentives throughout February and early March also make Macao an exceptionally welcoming destination for international guests. Whether arriving to enjoy the vibrant streets, the community celebrations or the artistic showcases, visitors are invited to soak up the city’s warmth and hospitality.
